“I don’t have a luxury yard or amazing scenery.”
Livery yards and farms are rarely designed with aesthetics or photoshoots in mind. They are practical, hardworking spaces created for the care and management of horses first and foremost. But that does not mean they cannot provide beautiful backdrops for professional equine photography.
In fact, the majority of my equine photography sessions take place at the horse’s own yard, and very often these familiar surroundings are exactly what help create relaxed, meaningful portraits.
Why do Familiar Locations Work So Well for Equine Photography?
Horses are creatures of habit, and many feel far more settled and confident in environments they know well. Photographing your horse at their home yard can help keep both horse and owner relaxed throughout the session, leading to more natural expressions, softer moments, and genuine connection in your photographs.
The aim of an equine photoshoot is not to create something that feels staged or unrealistic; it is to capture your horse’s personality and the relationship you share together.
Some of the most treasured photographs are taken in the ordinary places that hold the most memories.
The Location Scout
Before your equine photoshoot session begins, we will spend time walking around the yard together to find the best spots for your portraits. This location scout allows me to assess the light, surroundings, and background options to make the most of the spaces available.
You would be surprised how many beautiful portrait locations can be found on almost every livery yard in the UK.
Some of my favourite places to photograph horses include a simple gateway, fields, or hedge lined trackway. We can even include things such as logs, mounting blocks or trees as props for some unique portaits.
With the right light, angles, and composition, even simple locations can become stunning backdrops for timeless equine portraits.

You Do Not Need a Luxury Yard for Beautiful Horse Photographs
Social media can sometimes make it feel as though you need immaculate facilities, rolling hills, or modern American-style barns to have beautiful photographs taken with your horse. The reality is that professional equine photography is far more about emotion, connection, and storytelling than expensive surroundings - a huge part of it is also being able to make the most out of any location, and to sometimes be a little bit creative with the locations at hand.
A quiet moment outside your horse’s stable can often feel far more personal and meaningful than a dramatic landscape. The places where you tack up, groom, cuddle, and spend everyday time together are already part of your story; and that is what makes the images special.
