EQUINE PHOTOSHOOTS THROUGH THE SEASONS

The idea of booking an Equine Photoshoot often conjures up mental images of a warm summer’s evening decorated by long green grass and beautiful flowing dresses, but every season, including the winter months, have their own
unique characteristics that make them just as beautiful as the warmer months of the UK calendar.

JANUARY
- Frosty mornings
- Snow Photoshoots
- Beautiful Hazy lighting
- Mist & Fog
- Muted colours
- Cozy woolly jumpers
- Equines are either cute & fluffy or smartly clipped
- Frozen ground- aka no mud monsters!
FEBRUARY
- Valentine's Day!
- More colour around than January
- Daffodills
- Still some Potential for Snow/Frost Shoots
- Cooler, but often not freezing weather
- Layered clothing, but not just for warmth
- Snowdrops are in bloom
- February Half Term
MARCH
- Official start of British Summer Time (March 31st!)
- Warmer weather, but less flies to bother your horse
- Winter coats will be shedding
- Mother's Day
- Bluebell Season (March - May)
- Warmer days = less layers required!
- Great time of year for Black Background Photoshoots; less fluffy ponies, but the weather will often be over-cast meaning for easy shooting & more options for your locations.
APRIL
- April Showers; rain makes very atmospheric images if you don't mind getting damp
- Summer Coats in full swing
- Easter Holidays!
- Wild Garlic growing in hedges
- Hawthorn begins to bloom in the hedges until June
- Rhododendrons
- Overcast with Sunny spells make for a great diversity of images
MAY
- Cherry Blossom
- Dandelions will start decorating your Fields
- Rapeseed crops; beautiful golden landscapes
- Fresh & rejuvenated feel
- Plenty of colour
- Start of the Show Season!
JUNE
- Summer Photoshoots are in full swing
- Longer days & much warmer weather
- Dresses, T-shirts, Shorts, Skirts & Deck Shoes
- Buttercups in the fields
JULY
- School Summer Holidays
- Long grass & Meadows
- Warmer Evenings
- Golden hour photoshoots
- Thistles make for lovely purple accents
AUGUST
- Stubble fields
- Hay Bales
- Sunflower Fields; Mini-Photoshoot Sessions are underway!
- Long Summer Evenings
SEPTEMBER
- Autumn officially begins
- Catching the last of the Summer evening light
- Atmospheric foggy, misty mornings with low Sun
- Final flowers & greenery
- Less mud than upcoming months, but without the added heat
- Autumnal colours; woodland locations begin look incredible
- Show season comes to an end, so you horse's are fit & in their Summer coats & your diary is less hectic!
OCTOBER
- Prime time for Autumn Photoshoots
- Cloudy/Moody Skies
- Cooler weather but not freezing conditions
- Golden Colour palette
NOVEMBER
- Cool misty & foggy mornings
- Cold weather highlighting you & your horse's breath produces very atmospheric images
- Catching the last Autumnal Colours in the trees
- No flies to bother your horse
- Lovely evening light paired with Autumnal colour palette
- Fluffy ponies are starting to come back!
- Time to start planning Christmas gifts...
DECEMBER
- Christmas Mini-Photoshoots are in full swing
- Frost & Snow Photoshoots are potentially back
- Low winter morning light
- Festive Livery Yard bookings
When it comes to picking out which month to have your photoshoot; there is no secret answer or hidden trick
...Sorry!
But, considering your horse's needs & characteristics is often a good starting point.
For example; horses who suffer with sweet itch benenfit from Photoshoots in the cooler months where there are less flies to bother them. But on the other hand, Veteran Horses & Ponies may suit a late Summer Photoshoot, particularly if they take a while to shed their winter coat and benefit from Dr. Green in the Summer months.
However, I do recognise that a lot of these factors are also pinned on very changing variables, namely the weather, but my Diary is very flexible in order to work around this. If your beautiful Summer Photoshoot turns into a deluge of mud & rain we will simply reconvene & reorganise your Photoshoot date!
But at the end of the day, the adoration & bond you share with your horse will stand out whichever month you choose.
