Is it really a surprise that Black Background Photoshoots have soared in popularity over the last 5 years?
These striking & impactful portraits make for one of my most popular photoshoot sessions amongst my clients, and for good reason, too!

This particular style of photography produces dramatic, intimate, portraits that truly place your horse's unique beauty & character right at the very forefront - by compeltely stripping away all distractions & turning your equine friend into a beautiful work of art.

Many clients often assume that these sessions need a photography studio set-up with spooky lighting equiptment and backdrops, due to their striking nature.
However, they are actually a super simple set-up & can be achieved on almost any yard by selecting the correct location and simple photography techniques using natural light (that's where I come in!)

PICKING THE BEST LOCATION

In order to produce these striking portraits, we simply need an enclosed space with an accessible doorway.

This can be in the form of a stable doorway, an American style barn, Field shelters, Indoor arenas or even Store/Feed rooms! Anywhere that has ample space & is a safe doorway to stand your horse in.

Ideally, we want the location to be as dark as possible behind your horse, and to try & avoid back-light. So, closing any doors and windows or switching off internal lighting will help achieve this desired effect. These photoshoots are best done on overcast days where we will have gorgeous soft lighting to work with, avoiding those harsh shadows that come with bright sunlight. And, luckily for us, the UK offers an abundance of overcast, cloudy weather!

PREPARING YOUR HORSE

As with any Equine Photoshoot; preperation is key.
In order get the very best out of your Horse's Black Background Photoshoot consider The Three T's:

- TACK: As plain as possible is the best option for your Black Background Photoshoot. You want your horse to be the very centre of attention, not your new matchy-matchy nylon headcollar. So, the best option for these shoots are a plain leather headcollar (bonus points if you have a personalised nameplate), a plain bridle, or, if you want to go for the 'loose look' you are more than welcome to borrow my specialist Photoshoot headcollars to achieve that.

- TURNOUT: Your horse should be as clean as possible for their Black Background Photoshoot. A bath the day prior, followed by a really in-depth groom & hot towel right before the Photoshoot taking place, will make them look their very best. You can even use a coat shine or dab of baby oil to make them shine beautifully.

- TREAT SHAKER: Bring an enthusiastic friend to your Photoshoot Session to be the designated 'Treat Shaker' - a coveted & much appreciated role in creating a smooth & successful Photoshoot! No need for them to be 'horsey', their job will simply be to help get your horses ears forwards & get them looking in the right places.

THE SHOOT

We will place your horse at the entrance of the doorway we have chosen, and I will commence the shoot by doing my test shot. Setting my ISO, shutter speed and aperture in readiness for shooting.

Once fully organised & ready to go, we will get your horse stood in the correct position & with our Treat Shaker in  position we will begin your horse's photoshoot session!

The shoot itself is a shorter session - making it perfect for those of you with highly strung competition horses or younger horses that may struggle to pose for a longer photoshoot.

Black Background Photoshoots also lend themselves really beautifully to Fine-Art style images, where we can hone in on those smaller, unique features that your horse or pony may have, makeing for highly personal, dramatic keepsakes of your beloved Equine companion.
